Start with the problem, not the product
Most SaaS products fail before they launch - because they were built without validating the problem. Before writing any code, talk to potential customers. Confirm that the pain is real, frequent and expensive enough that people will pay to solve it.
Step 1: Define the MVP ruthlessly
An MVP is the smallest product that delivers the core promise. Write down every feature you dream of, then cut the list until only the essentials remain. Everything else goes into a "later" list. Speed to first real user matters more than completeness.
Step 2: Design for multiple tenants from day one
SaaS means one application serving many customers, with each customer’s data kept separate. Decide early how tenant isolation will work - separate databases, shared database with tenant IDs, or a mix. Retrofitting multi-tenancy later is expensive and risky.
Step 3: Build the core and the billing
- Authentication and user roles
- The core workflow your product is known for
- Subscription plans with monthly and yearly pricing
- Trial periods and upgrade flows
- Payment integration (Razorpay, Stripe or similar, subject to provider approval)
- An admin dashboard to monitor customers and revenue
Step 4: Launch small and learn fast
Onboard a handful of real customers personally. Watch how they use the product, where they get stuck and what they ask for. This feedback is worth more than months of internal polishing. Instrument analytics from day one so decisions are based on data, not opinions.
Step 5: Scale deliberately
Once the product retains customers, invest in reliability: cloud hosting, backups, monitoring and CI/CD pipelines. Grow features based on what paying users request, not what competitors ship.
